A Global Sleep Out to Call for an End to Global Homelessness

On the 7th of December 2019, in backyards, hometowns and iconic locations across the globe, thousands of people slept out in unison to create the world’s largest display of solidarity with and support of those experiencing homelessness and displacement.

Will Smith, Dame Helen Mirren, some of the World's biggest musicians and over 60,000 people throughout the world slept out under the stars to help those who have no other choice. Through the incredible dedication and support of the fundraisers, donors and event organisers the campaign was able to raise millions of dollars for charities helping those affected by homelessness and displacement. In addition to the money that was raised, we created a moment of global compassion, shone a spotlight on political and public awareness of the issue, and began a movement towards sustainable systemic change in communities and cities across the world.

Sleep Out events big and small to support homeless charities

Two months after the The World's Big Sleep Out Campaign, in February 2020, after two years of advocacy efforts by the Institute of Global Homelessness, (a beneficiary of The World's Big Sleep Out), the United Nations (UN) Commission on Social Development (CSocD)’s 58th Session met to debate the Priority Theme “Affordable housing and social protection systems for all to address homelessness” and issued the first UN resolution on homelessness in more than 30 years.

This new focus on homelessness will play a key role in ensuring that “no one is left behind” in the final decade of action towards the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The resulting resolution is a watershed moment in our advocacy to elevate homelessness into the UN ecosystem and serves as a platform for larger efforts.

We want to say a massive THANK YOU to everyone who took part in and donated to The World's Big Sleep Out for helped to raise vital funds and awareness to tackle the issues of homelessness and displacement worldwide.
